Actron CP9550 A DIY Car Care Necessity.
This should be one of the first things any do-it-yourself car guy (or DIY wannabe, like myself) should get. This code reader is small, easy to use, and doesn't even need batteries (it runs off your car's battery). Gives most of the code definitions right on the screen, and also displays the code number (useful if it happens to be a code that isn't defined). And the best part is that it lets you clear out the error codes (check engine light). Even if you only use it once, it'll save you money because most repair shops will charge you $100 just to read a code. Once you know the problem, you can solve it yourself or at least avoid paying for a fix you didn't need.

The product came as advertised from Amazon in just a few days with free shipping. Works great, easy to use, does what it suppose to do and is relatively inexpensive. I highly recommend it. Don't look any further for a better basic code reader.

Actron CP9550 Money Saver.
Really happy with this product. Verified every conclusion I had about what was going bad with the engine on my 2000 Dodge Dakota. Also showed how few items are actually controlled by the brain box so I have a better idea of what to check manually and not just rely on some trouble light to assure everything is operating within its range. Purchase price actually saves money over what it costs (per time) to have the codes interpreted at a garage. Small and convenient to store in the dash of my truck. Might mention that the cable is labeled to contain lead, easily covered by cable wrap if that is a concern.

Actron CP9550 Pocket Scan Plus has saved me money.
This code reader has saved me money so far, by telling me that minor things that I can fix (loose gas cap) are the source of a code light, saving me a trip to the dealer. It has also been useful in diagnosing other car problems that I had, later confirmed when I brought it to the dealer.

I bought this to help me detect the reason my check engine light was on in my 2003 Dodge Dalota truck. I opened the package, read the simple instructions, plugged it into the car and quickly read my error codes. Did some quick research on the internet, and within 20 minutes looked for and found a cracked hose in my engine compartment. I replaced the hose ($5) and then cleared the errors. The check engine light has stayed off and the truck has since passed State inspection. The dealer wanted $125 to just tell me what was wrong. Having the dealer fix it would have cost more, I am sure. Now I lend this out to my neighbors as needed. A must have for a DIYer.

HI, I LIVE OUTSIDE OF SYDNEY AUSTRALIA.I NEEDED SOMETHING TO FIND OUT WHAT IT WAS THAT MADE MY WARNING CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON OUR FORD ESCAPE V6. I ORDERED THE ACTRON CP9550 AND IT CAME ALL THE WAY FROM THE USA AND AS SOON AS I HOOKED IT ON P0420 ERROR CAME ON IT'S SCREEN WHICH IS A SENSOR PART OF THE EXHAUST POLLUTION DEVICES. Let's face it, cars are more complicated and as a result are longer lasting and yet can be problematic. Unlike pre-computer days when you could fix it yourself, now you must first know the Symptom to the "Check Engine Light". I could have purchased a much more expensive unit that would give me more Information. Fact of the matter is too much info can be just that. I plugged the unit in to the OBD port, it listed the Code and in 30 seconds the problem was resolved and the code was erased. The last time a trouble code came up I took it to the repair shop 5 minutes and $70 later he cleared the code and told me "did you know the PCV hose was disconnected". I had just finished servicing the Air filter, so "DUH" I messed up and pulled the connection loose when I lifted the cover off the Filter housing. That won't happen again with this little jewel. Do yourself a favor and get a "Code Reader" and save from now on. Eliminate those simple "OOPS, I Screwed Up" and save some money.
